Discover the hidden language of Masks

LED BY ANDRES ANGULO

In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of mask work. Mask theatre requires the whole body: movement, breathing, and good timing are especially important. Through a variety of exercises and games—both with and without masks—participants will discover the four key tools for mask work: breath, direction, focus, and timing. The workshop not only demonstrates how these techniques function but also shows how to apply them on stage to develop characters, interact with others, and bring the mask to life. Andres combines technical training with physical exercises, emphasizing that good technique and precise movements lead to clear and powerful performances.

Encounter with the mask

LED BY NICOLAS WITTE

In this basic 3-day workshop, we will explore the masks of Familie Flöz. The goal of this course is to develop a fundamental understanding of what it takes to work with masks and how to convey a lot without using words. What does it take to breathe life into a static form—the mask? We will focus on the essential elements of mask acting: through the mask, we discover a state of physical presence and learn how to bring the mask to life through movement, emotions, posture, tension levels, and breathing. This process allows a new, independent, and unique character to gradually emerge. The actors become creators, storytellers, and performers of their newly created characters. Using their physicality and playful imagination, participants will explore and develop mask play. Through simple improvisations and short, structured scenarios, we will examine the connection between the mask, interaction with fellow actors, and engagement with the audience. The mask serves as our starting point for initial encounters and the stories that unfold from them. Nicolas will focus on refining and inspiring each participant’s acting skills, refreshing their expressive range, and enhancing their performance with clarity through straightforward technical tools. The workshop emphasizes continuous reflection and collaborative, playful exercises to foster growth and creativity.

Tools - the craft of storytelling

LED BY MATS SÜTHOFF

How you frame your work often shapes your creative possibilities. This workshop is an invitation to immerse yourself in methods and structures to bring your vision to life on stage. In my experience, oftentimes simple tasks and tools are key in creating material, organizing and structuring storylines, and thus captivating the audience. On the one hand, you will discover tools from my personal toolbox. Tools that have proven themselves in various storytelling processes - in my long standing work as author and actor with Familie Flöz, as freelance choreographer and dramaturg collaborating with directors like Lucia Bihler, and as director of my own theatre and film productions. On the other hand, you will go through a complete theatre process - from the first idea to the final evaluation and everything in between. Four days of practical physical and theoretical, reflective work. Through group exercises, improvisation, and individual coaching, you will gain practical skills, deepen your understanding of theatrical tools, and unlock new areas of artistic expression. A chance to widen your toolset. This workshop is aimed at experienced storytellers - no matter whether you are a theatremaker, filmmaker, writer, actor, director, dramaturg, choreographer, dancer, stage or costume designer, visual artist, and anyone passionate about storytelling. While masks can be incorporated, the focus of this workshop is not on mask play.

Moving the Character

LED BY VALENTINA BORDENAVE, ANNA KISTEL

In this workshop, participants develop characters for mask performances through a body-centered approach—focusing primarily on physical experience rather than psychological or intellectual considerations. Each day begins with "Tuning the Instrument" UNFOLD, an effective movement and awareness training that enhances balance and coordination. From this heightened body awareness, which recognizes personal movement patterns and provides tools for their transformation, artistic potential can fully unfold. A powerful interplay emerges between space, time, form, movement, emotions, and stories. The workshop follows an indirect developmental process, ranging from movement improvisations to collaborative exploration of character traits. Through alternating roles as external observers and creators/performers, participants work together in pairs and small groups. Together, they develop dramatic and poetic material to bring the masks to life. Participants work with their individual physical capabilities and can adjust the intensity according to their personal capacity. No special movement skills are required—only a genuine interest in movement. The workshop is conducted in English. The writing process can be carried out in participants' native languages if desired.
