For over 30 years, creative curiosity, collaboration, and the development of collective working methods have been the driving forces behind what we do. We look forward to opening our doors again in the coming season: Through four different workshops, we’ll offer in-depth insights into various aspects of our work.

Our workshops offer a space for you to connect creatively with others, explore your own boundaries, and go beyond them. The mask is a valuable tool in this process, helping you discover new perspectives and immerse yourself in different roles.

The courses are designed for interested individuals with various levels of experience. The focus of each workshop is shaped by the artistic background and personalities of the facilitators.

What does it take to play with a mask?
This 3-day workshop approaches this question step by step and breath by breath.

The starting point is exploring the possibilities of expressing ourselves beyond words, discovering the body as an instrument. These experiences are then transferred to the mask. Alongside the basic techniques of mask playing, the workshop dives deep into the playfulness and energy necessary to breathe life into the mask. Working with levels of tension, focus, physical transformation and improvisation – always searching for authentic moments.
These moments can be recognized in the very instant the mask comes alive.

Mask making – like all activities in theatre and devised performance - is part of a multi-layered creative process. The mask maker is a creative artisan working at the intersection of the fine arts and the performing arts. It's the unique task of creating an object that is, in a sense, unfinished - one that only comes to life through the performer’s acting and the viewer’s perception.

This 9-day workshop will offer each participant the opportunity to create a self designed full mask from paper-maché. In addition to an exploration of the craft of mask making, participants will be encouraged to develop a strong sense of creative ownership. Starting from their own initial ideas and designs, participants will search for their own form. They will develop a character all the way to a form modelled in clay, creating a mould before laminating the full mask in paper mache. The entire process will be supported throughout via critical feedback and helpful advice.

Alongside practical information about materials and the process of mask making, participants will learn about essential factors such as anatomy, asymmetry, lighting, etc., which help the mask to come alive on stage.

Hajo is a trained performer and co-founder of FAMILIE FLÖZ. As an autodidact he has been creating masks for the stage for 30 years. He also works as a director.
Lei-Lei is a performer and puppeteer, creating masks and puppets for the stage. She works with FF since 2022.

One of the most exciting moments of working in a devising process: discovering a theme, inventing characters, defining their objectives, and creating the obstacles they must overcome.
But where to begin? And what kinds of stories can be told with a full mask?
During this four-day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to create, develop, and perform their original scenes using Flöz masks.
The creative process closely follows the approach used within the company to create its own productions. This workshop offers an excellent opportunity for participants who wish to deepen their understanding of mask work and the creative process.
This workshop is designed for participants who already have some experience working with masks or who have taken part in at least one previous Familie Flöz workshop.

In this 3-day workshop, participants explore the expressive masks of Familie Flöz and discover the fundamentals of mask performance and nonverbal storytelling.
Through movement, posture, breath, and physical presence, they learn how to bring a mask to life and develop original characters. The workshop emphasizes playfulness, imagination, and physical expression, encouraging participants to become creators and storytellers through the mask.
Music and sound are central to the process. Working with both live and recorded music, participants explore how rhythm, atmosphere, and silence inspire movement, shape interaction, and awaken the mask. Music becomes a creative partner, allowing stories and characters to emerge without words. Through improvisation and ensemble work, participants investigate the relationship between the mask, the performer, the music, and the audience. Nicolas offers practical tools to strengthen physical awareness, expressive clarity, and stage presence in a collaborative and playful environment.

Participants who play an instrument are warmly encouraged to bring it along.
